 He was a figure of mid-light,
 across the ember-lighted hall
 The only one to notice me,
 alone against the wall
 The other girls were like flowers,
 burning brightly at the ball
 Though they try to catch his eye,
 he wanted me above them all
 When we danced,
 he put his arms around me cold and danced sweet
 And as we left,
 I saw that he had cloven hooves instead of feet
 In the morning he came calling;
 granny hid me beneath the stairs
 She tried to tell him I was gone,
 but somehow he knew I was there
 Then he burst in
 He swallowed grannieth and chased me as we left
 He grabbed my hair
 tore out a lock as he flew back among them
 I need a hearse
 with a hundred copper wigs

 As I wept by the fireplace
 smoke (?) the embers die
 I thought I heard them whisper
 begging me to step inside
 I said a prayer granny taught me
 Knowing that I needn't (feel?)
 Jumped on the coals
 Shut my eyes
 and waited for my flesh to see
 But it was cold
 And as I looked about as dark as fa (?)way
 My ears were filled
 With cries of anguish I stumbled in pain
