When Our Parents Die

when we're born we're wrapped up in blankets
 and baptized in water and shown around town
 its a good life just being a baby
 looking up occasionally and cooing at strangers
 when we live we are creatures of habit
 setting the table and stocking the pantry
 when we live we are high school bus drivers
 and mothers and fighters and losers and fools
 when our parents die we'll be young again
 nobody's gonna check under my bed
 the day my parents die
 we're insured but we're not sure of nothing
 tasting those memories of summer camp love
 and all the proverbs and fables and wise words
 couldn't teach us nothing cause we weren't gonna listen
 but when our parents die we'll be listening
 there's no sound quite like the empty house
 on the day your parents die
 and our minds were once throbbing sponges
 testing the air for the last drip of knowledge
 and as we grow we are soaked in frustration
 only remembering we remembered something once
 when our parents die we'll remember them
 all the things we wished we would have said
 before the day our parents died
