Rock and a Hard Place

Here I sit now like a bird in a sling
 With my eye on the sky and this folded wing
 A dream may as well be a runaway star
 If you don't have the heart to try to reach that far
 But if I find the courage, will I lose my excuse?
 What'll be left behind when it's time to choose?
 If I find my purpose, will it ruin my plan?
 If I give up the image, what will happen to the man?
 Here I am between a rock and a hard place
 With a stone-cold fact getting harder to face
 If I want to go up, I can't back down
 Can't fly to the moon without leaving the ground
 But I keep rolling back, between a rock and a hard place
 They say that this is what life is about
 When you take something in, got to leave something out
 You can't hit the wall if you don't go to bat
 But how do I pick between this thing and that?
 I run out of darkness with the dawning of day
 But I can't see the light 'cause I'm turned away
 Caught between white and brighter shades of black
 I'm hell-bound for heaven but I keep rolling back

 Between the one I was and the one I'm not
 Between the trigger and too long of a shot
 I'll never get where I'm going till I get off this spot
