An Exodus of Hope

Sifting through the dissonance
 A wall of total confusion
 A heartfelt reward for my persistence
 I am alive despite the influx of agony on display
 The deplorable images absorbed upon the retina
 Of a once wondrous man
 These cycles of grief deem to devour me
 Exhausted and affected by the constant tragedy
 Cycles of life and death resume
 Feeling the wrath of a hero's survival
 This sense of loss is contagious
 Spreading fear
 A mass exodus of hope
 A sea of tearful eyes forever fixed
 Upon the elegance of the setting sun
 I'll never forget the stench of those who died beside me
 Fetid, Bleeding
 The wounded writhing on the bodies beneath me
 These cycles of grief breed through the dreams that torment
 Resist the infection
 The anguish feculent and rotting
 Cycles of life and death resume
 The burden of these vestiges
 Wearing a hole right through me
 Young and hostile
 I bought the lie they'd sell me
 The true horrors of war shrouded in their gilded glory
