The Day the Stars Came Down

I wrote the story of our love
 On a great big piece of paper
 And I cut it up in little stars
 So nobody would know who you are
 Because they didn't want to hear it anymore
 I should have long since given up
 But I held you in my heart through it all
 And I stuck those stars all over every wall
 And I wished upon them for the day that you'd return
 You'd remember what you missed
 And you would come back for my kiss
 I kept surrounded by my emptiness and hope
 Shining at me all around
 Till the day the stars came down
 I still believed that you would call
 But when you did it took me by surprise
 When you told you had planned your wedding day
 You couldn't see me wipe the tears away
 And I didn't want to hear it anymore
 But I let you be the first one to hang up
 I thanked you for the good news and the call
 And I just stared up at those stars upon my wall
 Cause I had wished upon them for the day that you'd return
 You'd remember what you missed
 You wouldn't break my heart like this
 I kept surrounded by my emptiness and hope
 Shining at me all around
 Till the day the stars came down
 One by one I took them down and I threw them all away
 And I opened up my heart to a clean slate
 And all at once I looked outside and I finally saw the light
 Of real stars shining down through the night
 And now I wish upon them for a love that's meant to be
 And I try to wish you well
 I still remember how I fell
 But I am thankful when your name gets thrown around
 All around this little town
 For the day the stars came down
