Nationhood

There's no such thing as Nationhood,
 Save that which hides within a prayer or a glass,
 And only serves to soothe the fool,
 Demanding death from every man,
 Death! From every man...
 There's no such thing as brotherhood,
 Such hopeless dreams will never come to pass,
 If we so lightly spill our precious blood,
 So cheaply hold the life of every man -
 Life! Of every man...
 For, what is a nation,
 But a point in time,
 History's aberrations
 Form and fill my mind.
 My imagination sees their ranks in line,
 Now incantations, louder all the time.
 We've got a flag, a badge and a song,
 To fill our minds and sweep us along.
 Are we a creed, a race or a dream?
 What's in a name and what does it mean?
 Idle speculation?
 Claim it, that's your right,
 But hear my exhortation,
 For I claim tonight,
 There's no such thing as Common Good!
