The Last Time It Mattered

I waited in the car, outside the airport
 as she went in to get him
 I could see them through the glass
 the plane arrived on time, the man's on time
 his life runs just like clockwork
 but his face is just a mask
 her arms embraced him
 or maybe they erased him, I don't know
 she's searching in his eyes
 asking for a simple piece of information
 and he cannot say (cannot?)
 That was the last time it mattered
 he might not love her anymore
 that was the last time it mattered
 that he could not say for sure
 that was the last time it mattered
 that his reasons didn't fly
 the last time that love would pass her by
 He left a window open wide enough
 for her to leave without a whisper
 or a sweet goodbye
 her love in the hands of another man
 was all it took for him to miss her
 or to wonder why
 his thoughts embrace her
 just like they erased her all those years
 and he's searching in his soul
