Tergiversation

It didn't start with the camps
 with hate literature or banks
 It didn't end with a war,
 diplomacy or bombs ashore
 It didn't start with the disappearing ones
 nor with the way you educate your sons
 It didn't start with you and me
 yes it did, we said ok to ambiguity
 It started with a racist phrase
 with intolerance built over days
 It started with a fake superiority
 with the creation of a minority
 The past is the present and the future is now
 Will you fight or submit and take a bow
 Locked in a prison of hate-filled fear
 The key is the enemy you keep near
 Believe all, hear none, screens consumed
 Deny all, read none, books entombed
 Stop telling me that it started with us
 look away with me, why even discuss
 It started by exploiting your insecurities
 by making you believe in impurities
 It started by telling you to belong
 telling you to send others along
 It started by giving hate a human form
 giving you shelter from the coming storm
 It started by controlling music and art
 by giving your shame a brand new start
 It didn't end with... it never ends
 we're all fools trying to make amends
