 Wind reached into the night, like fingers on a hand from hell
 Along a country road that would have a story to tell
 About the elder's wife and a preacher who fell
 When he preached his sermons, she would stare at his hands
 They were kind and gentle, like no other man's
 How she could love another, she could not understand
 The elder's wife was a mistreated lady
 She'd known years of abuse and hope now faded

 Preacher got to her door, she said, ""preacher, help me please""
 He put his arm around her, he could feel her need
 She brought him down, and she was free
 Preacher left town, left behind his bible and robe
 Nobody knew why he up-ed and go
 Except the elder's wife, and the right reverend Jones
