We found him by the roadside
 Nothing to him but his name
 He struggled to his feet
 Withered from the heat
 Cussing at the street
 "I don't want your help, I just want to know where I am."
 Then he slowly looked around
 Recognized the town
 Then he laid back down

 When she walked into the courthouse
 The blood on her blouse was still wet
 They took one look at her face
 Certain of the case
 A horrible disgrace
 "I don't want your mercy, I want you to know why I'm here."
 Then she told them of the pain
 The horrible refrain
 Of a life in chains
