Courage

she has a heart
 that belongs in rooms
 for people like me
 to stare and look into
 beautiful and real
 more real than me
 i only wish i had
 the lungs to swim that deep
 it's not just one
 moment or phrase
 that makes it crumble
 i swear i could almost taste it
 just outside of reach
 right in front of me
 i've built these walls
 higher than i should
 but each brick that's laid
 can be burned like wood
 and maybe they should
 right in front of me... right in...
 the sadest songs are made like this
 a shotgun rifle set to miss
 if we bite our tongues and hold our breath
 long enuff we might taste the rest
 a wishfull knife kills the fall
 and a mouthfull of courage will end it all
 and sometimes that's just the way it ends...
 not every story's sad
 some aren't even good
 some don't end at all
 but most end like they should.
