Strange Walking Man

There was a strange walking man
 Leaving footsteps on my lawn.
 He cried, "I can't understand.
 My love left just before the dawn.
 From velvet valleys of dreams
 By her leaving I was drawn,
 And in my sorrow it seems
 That I'm too blind to see the dawn."
 The misty morning heard his cries,
 Felt tears from his poor wasted eyes.
 "My love went with the sunrise
 Wish I could see the sunrise
 Wish I could see the sun today."
 How could I stand and explain
 The truth to his blind trusting eyes?
 But could I love her again,
 Knowing I won her love with lies?
 The lonely strange walking man
 Thanking me to help him see,
 But could I just take his hand
 And tell him she lay next to me?
 I followed footprints he made in the frost
 Across the dewy lawn where he was lost.
 Is that his shadow I see?
 Why does his face escape me?
 Where is the strange walking man?
