Pastor Stopped By

The pastor stopped by this evening
 Said they'd missed me at church
 Turns out my momma had asked him to come see me at my worst
 She's scared that she's losing her baby
 That her son and heaven won't meet
 And church is the only place that can help people see
 But they don't

 I told the man sitting there across from me
 That he was a good man, and I'm glad he came
 And even though I wouldn't be returning, I had something to say
 I asked him if he could remember
 The sermon he preached six weeks ago
 He smiled and laughed, and said, "Son I don't."
 And they don't

 You can ask God to give you favor
 You can claim all of heaven now
 But it's your knees that'll find the Savior when they touch the ground
 A man can't teach you Jesus
 He can only teach you Jesus in him
 The stories can't be unraveled from the places they've lived
 And they won't

 So don't tell me Sunday mornings will save me
 I've heard that for forty years
 It's not the wedding or the funeral, but the people who matter here
 Would you give your time to your neighbor?
 Would you trade your phone for bread?
 Do we hold the truth in our world, or was it just things we said?
