As I rode up to Galway Town
 To seek for recreation
 On the seventeenth of August
 My mind been elevated
 There's multitudes assembled
 With their tickets at the station
 My eyes began to dazzle
 As they're off to see the races
 With your whack-fol-all-fol
 Diddley-idle-ay
 There are passengers from Limerick
 Passengers from Kerry
 And passengers from Wexford Town
 And Claire unmarried ladies
 People from Cork City
 That were loyal, true, and faithful
 They brought home Fenian prisoners
 From dyin' in foreign nations
 With your whack-fol-all-fol
 Diddley-idle-ay
 Oh, it's there you'll see confectioners
 With sugarsticks and dainties
 And lozenges and oranges
 The lemonade and raisins
 Gingerbread and spices
 To accommodate the ladies
 And a big crubeen for thruppence
 To be pickin' at while you're able
 With your whack-fol-all-fol
 Diddley-idle-ay
 And it's there you'll see the pipers
 And fiddlers competin'
 Ah, the nimble-footed dancers
 Are trippin' up on the daisies
 Others cryin' cigars and lights
 And bills for all the races
 The colors of the jockeys
 And the price and horses' ages
 With your whack-fol-all-fol
 Diddley-idle-ay
 It's there you'll see the jockeys are
 They're mounted on so slately
 The blue, the pink, the orange, the green
 The emblems of our nation
 When the bell was rung for starting
 All the horses seemed impatient
 I thought they never stood on ground
 Their speed was so amazing

 And there were half a million people
 There of all denominations
 The Catholic and Protestant
 And Jew and Presbyterian
 Yet no animosity
 No matter what persuasion
 Cause failte hospitality
