Distance

As I reflect back on it now
 I can see where we went wrong
 Our disunion was there from the start
 It just took some time to dawn
 But early on you drew me close
 And you said that I was one among your own
 But as the time went by I looked to my side
 And saw I was all alone
 For all those years I did it all your way
 And I could still show you the scars
 But when I did you turned your face away
 At least I know now what you are
 So I'll keep my distance
 You wonder if I'm still around
 Yeah I'm still in town but I keep mostly to myself
 But I'm still dumb enough to hope that you will call my phone
 And say you want me back
 But you won't
 For all those years I did it all your way
 And I could still show you the scars
 But when I did you turned your face away
 At least I know now what you are
 So I'll keep my distance
 Now that your words come back to you
 You're empty promises show through
 It's now what you say it's what you do
 By your own insistence
 And when nobody's there for you
 Then you'll know what you put me through
 That day you'll be somebody new
 And that's when I'll close the distance
