As We Fall

I walk on my toes because
 My mother walks on her heels
 But I'm beginning to understand
 Understand the way that she feels
 Frozen water on the ground
 Is a means to the end
 Only in the fall is relief found
 On the way down she grabs my hand
 And during those seconds of weightlessness
 She can forget it all
 All of those sad thoughts
 Over which she obsesses
 She is in the moment as she falls
 I'm spinning on the floor again
 My guts spilled onto the street
 Scraping knees and elbows on cement
 Sharp stones they stab my bare feet
 Went swimming naked in the Grand
 River water burns my face
 I'm yelling pleading to my friends
 Just let me float away
 And during those seconds of weightlessness
 I can forget it all
 I look up at the stars
 Let the water take me
 I am in the moment as I fall
 I needed you so far away
 You pull me in but never stay
 This distance is your only way
 To stay together you must escape
 We're not so different after all
 I reach for you you reach me as we fall
